Communication network- the interaction pattern or flow of messages between group members. Creates structure b/c the network facilitates and constraints who can talk to whom. Communication, formal, affective, material, proximity, and cognitive describe the nature of ties or relationships you have with other group members. Network ties strong or weak (based on relationship) Stronger ties with friends and family than with group members. Means relationships among group members can be described or evaluated. Network- a social structure that consists of group members and the relationship/ties among them. Formal roles- roles that a group must have to get its work done. 3 formal roles leader, secretary/recorder, and critical advisor. Informal roles- roles that emerge naturally through group member interaction. Task goals examples (informal) coordinator, evaluator, information giver. Maintenance goals examples (informal) encourager, harmonizer, follower. Decentralized networks- members communicate w/o restrictions; allows each member to talk to every group member. Weaknesses problem solving and decision making may slow down group activities.
