CHEM 1314 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Significant Figures, Scientific Notation, Electric Current
Document Summary
Process for understanding nature by observing nature and its behavior and by conducting experiments to test ideas. Observation- data, descriptions about behavior of nature. Scientific theory- model for the way nature is and tries to explain not only what nature does, but why: can never be proven, only can have evidence to support it. Scientific law- brief statement that summarizes past observations and predicts future ones: describe how nature behaves/what nature does. Ask a question research hypothesis experiment observation law. Classified by state (physical form) and composition (what it"s made of) Elements- can"t be broken down to simpler form by chemical means. Compounds- substances that are chemically combined in same proportions. Composition varies from one region of the mixture to the other. Homogeneous- multiple substances that appear to be one (kool-aid) Changes that alters state or appearance but not composition. Ex. dissolving substances in water to create solutions. Atoms rearrange, transforming the original substance into different substances.
