Performed in times of illness or to ward off evil spirits, provide protection, and prevent pain or future illness: commemorative dance: serve as remembrance and celebration of special or sacred events. These events are often astral or geological phenomenon, such as the summer solstice or a volcanic eruption. Hawaiian hula to appease the god pele is a great example of this type of dance: dance of transcendence: participants believed they could transcend the physical realm and make contact with the spirit world.
