Children learn to read and write after they speak. Writing is a graphic representation of linguistic utterance. Pictures are not writing, though pictographs can be used in writing. Morphographs: where symbols are related to morphemes (eg. chinese) Phonographic: where symbols represent units of sound (eg. english) Writing is relatively recent in human life.
