PSYC 023 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Nonverbal Communication, Social Perception, Eye Contact
Document Summary
Social perception: process by which we come to understand others. We"ll look at: nonverbal behavior, attribution: how we explain/analyze behavior, how we integrate our observations into impressions of others, how our impressions can subtly create a distorted picture of reality. There are 6 universal expressions: anger, fear, disgust, surprise, happiness, sadness. Other emotions such as guilt, shame, embarrassment, and pride occur later in human development and show less universality: closely tied to social interaction. Distinguishing truth from deception: four channels provide relevant information, words: cannot be trusted, face: controllable, body: somewhat more revealing than face, voice: most revealing clue. Attribution theories: attribution theory describes the process by which we make attributions: header: explanations can be grouped into two categories, personal attributions, situational attributions. External attribution: looking more into the situation they are in. We infer from an action whether the act itself corresponds to an enduring personal characteristic.
