The form of language (phonology, morphology, syntax) The function of language in communication (pragmatics) Some late talkers catch up on own. Some will never catch up and the clinical picture becomes clearer with age (sli, id, asd, ld) The child"s individual strengths and weaknesses more important than the label. Specific strengths/ weaknesses guide teaching strategies, supports, and interventions. Morphology - is the system that governs the structure of words and the construction of word forms. Ex. child at 13 months two birdie , same child at 24 months two. Birdies adding the s morpheme to indicate the plural form. Syntax - is the system governing the order and combination of words to form sentences and the relationships among the elements within a sentence. Ex. understanding of the english order in spoken and written language.
