Until the mid 1970s, us incarceration rates were similar to other industrialized democracies. 80% of americans believe the us has unique character that makes it the greatest country in the world. Prison population rate = per 100,000 of national population. No national database and prisons tend to operate behind closed doors . Hard to do international data because laws are different and how we define things. Black men are more likely than white men to be incarcerated as well as latino men. Women are much less likely to be incarcerated but black women are twice as likely to be incarcerated than white women and are more likely than latinas. Us has the most adult and juvenile prisoners than all other countries.
