Document Summary

Severe physical or sexual abuse (severe enough to cause injury) Marital rape: 8-14% of wives since marriage. Wife beating: 25% of wives since marriage. Child abuse: 6% of children every year (4. 5 million children) This is the most minimal estimates there are because of definitional problems, counting problems, and hidden cases because of reluctance of families to reveal their abuse. Marital rape: raping of the wife by the husband. Most rapes in marriage involve physical violence or threat of it. Vaginal rapes account for less than half of marital rapes. Presumably, the more strongly the husband believes in the patriarchy, the more likely he is to rape his wife. Wife beating: 1/3 of all us married people assault their spouses every year and the other 2/3 assault their spouse at least once during their marriage. Wives are as likely, if not more likely, than their husbands to be offenders. This study had some issues in defining violent and nonviolent acts.
