Chapter 1 discusses about the purpose and scope of the book and explains various concepts like heavy construction. It also discusses about the special features of the book like technical specification writing according to. Csi format, use of heavy earthworks as examples and illustrations to name a few. Design guidelines and recommendations on the preparation of drawings and specifications are introduced in this book. It is also interesting how in the use of design guidelines section, the author says that the readers are expected to use their own judgement and experience to decide what is and is not acceptable. The purpose of the competitive bidding process is to select a contractor to construct the project. Several steps for competitive bidding include advertising, prebid meeting, issuance of bid amendments, bid opening, bid evaluation and contractor selection. Bid documents are information furnished to the bidders during the bidding period. All contractual, administrative, and technical requirements are contained in these documents.
