Ppl who exhibited bizarre or deviant behavior were believed to be possessed by evil spirits. More than 2000 years ago, hippocrates ad his followers suggested that psychological disorders should be treated as products of the body. Ppl get depressed for the same reason we get a cold-the body and brain, and hence the mind, are affected by some kind of disease . Changes in diet and exercise as a way of treating depression. 19th and early 20th century researchers began to est links bw known physical problems and the symptoms of psychological disorders. End 19th century they thought syphilis was also responsible for paranoia and hallucinations. Making this link bw syphilis and mental problems was actually important step in the eventual development of biologically based therapies.
