SO 101 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Married People, Social Integration, Social Forces
Document Summary
Sociology - the systematic study of human society. Sociological perspective - seeing the general (general patterns) in the particular (particular people) How general categories (children, adults, men, women, rich, poor) we fall in shape our particular experiences. Society plays a role in all decisions an individual makes. Emile durkheim - one of sociologies pioneers. Social forces are at work even in intense, personal actions (i. e. suicide) Men, protestants, wealthy people, unmarried people = more likely to commit suicide than women, catholics, jews, poor and married people. Categories with strong social ties = low suicide rates. More individualistic people = high suicide rates. Freedom weakens social ties increases suicide rate (ex: men = more free than women) Outsider = not part of the dominant category. The greater people"s social marginality, the better they are able to use the sociological perspective. To get better at using sociological perspective step back from familiar routines and look at our lives with a new curiosity.
