Culture - the ways of thinking, ways of acting, and material objects that together form a. Non-material culture - consists of the ideas created by members of a society people"s way of life (art zen) Material culture - physical things (arm chairs zippers) Culture = shared way of life or social heritage. Society - people who interact in a defined territory and share a culture. Culture shock - personal disorientation when experiencing an unfamiliar way of life. Humans are not the only creatures who have culture, but we are the only creatures who depend on culture to survive. Symbol - anything that carries a particular meaning recognized by people who share a culture. Language - a system of symbols that allows people to communicate with one another. Cultural transmission - the process by which one generation passes culture to the next. Sapir-whorf thesis - people see and understand the world through the cultural lense of language.
