Book review on general theory of crime -- polk. Gottfredson and hirschi define crime as acts of force or fraud undertaken in the pursuit of self interest . Hirschi states in research that supervision of children of parents who have criminal records is more relaxed or poor. Gottfredson and hirschi deny the idea that white collar crime is a special type of crime. Life course perspectives of criminality -- tibbetts & hemmens. Developmental theories are explanatory models of criminal behavior that follow individuals throughout their lives, so it ends up explaining the development of offending over time. Tends to look at the individual as an object of analysis. Onset of offending is when the individual begins to commit crimes. Early onset is considered 14 years or earlier. Hirschi and gottfredson proposed the general theory of low self control as the primary cause of all crime. Theory assumes that individuals born predisposed toward selfish, self-centered activities.
