ENS 303 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Skeletal Muscle, Muscle Tissue, Myocyte
Document Summary
Cardiac tissue: only found in heart and is involuntary. Smooth muscle: forms the walls of your abdominal organs, blood vessels, and airway, it is involuntary too. Skeletal muscle tissue: moving the bones of skeleton, voluntary. 600 skeletal muscles is a separate organ (structure composed of two or more kinds of tissue with a specific function) Muscle cells (muscle fibers) are elongated tubes that have incredible movement potential. Muscle tissue: produce movement and maintain postural support (mobility and stability) Primarily pulls its fascial elements towards its center which includes attaching tendons. Three scenarios when a muscle contracts and shortens: Pull bone a toward the center of the muscle. Pull bone b toward the center of the muscle. Muscles generate movement at one of its attachment sites more than the other. Muscles have origin (attachment to the more stationary bone) and insertion (connection to the mobile bone or tendinous connection points) or called proximal and distal attachment sites.
