ENS 303 Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: Agonist, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Maximum Force
Document Summary
Primer mover is the muscle that produces the main action. Any muscle that assists the agonist in producing the main action. Due to size, leverage, angle of pull, a synergist is less effective at producing the main action but is lots of assistance. Executes the action opposite that of the agonist when it shortens. If agonist and antagonist contract at the same time, a co-contraction occurs, no motion will transpire. Antagonist can length passively or with an eccentric contraction. Role: steadily relaxing to allow and control the action at the join. Muscle is necessary because agonist knows no direction when it engages. Needs fixating force to prevent an undesired action and dictate which end. Just contacts pulling both sides at the same time of the agonists bony attachments will move. Often does not function near the main action, supports another part of the body in position while main action occurs. Synergists: assists the agonists in producing the main action.
