Document Summary
Human development strategies in south asia: the battle for human development will primarily be won or lost in asia, as this is where 70 percent of developing world people live. Asia has enabled significant human growth in the last three decades. The average life expectancy rose by 18 years from 46 years in 1960 to 64 years in 1990. The average primary registration rose from 57% to 71% The mortality rates were about half those for babies and teenagers. And east asia"s one-year-old immunization coverage is now about 85 percent higher than the average of developing countries: however, human suffering has an agonizing and protracted purpose. About 700 million people live in extreme poverty. More than 600 million people can"t read or write, two-thirds of them female. And nearly half of people have no access to safe drinking water. Inside asia the large differences are more troubling.
