Document Summary

Flow of genetic info in all living cells is dna rna protein: conversion of genetic info in dna into rna and protein is termed gene expression. Transcription is catalyzed by enzyme rna polymerase, which uses nucleotide sequences in dna to determine which strand to use as template and where to start/stop transcribing. Rna differs from dna in several ways: 1) has sugar ribose instead of deoxyribose, 2) has base uracil instead of thymine, 3) synthesized as single-stranded molecules that can fold up into complex 3d shapes. Several functional types of rna: messenger rna (mrna)- carries instructions for making proteins, ribosomal rna (rrna)- crucial components of ribosomes, transfer rna (trna)- act as adaptor molecules in protein synthesis. To being transcription, rna polymerase binds to promoters that lie directly upstream of genes: to initiate, eukaryotic rna requires binding of general transcription factors at promoter, but bacterial rna polymerase only requires binding of sigma factor.
