Data= information we gather with experiments and surveys. Statistics= the art and science of designing studies and analyzing the data that the studies produce. Goal is translating data into knowledge and understanding of the world around us. Involves 4 components: formulate statistical question, collect data, analyze data. 3 main components of statistics for answering a question: design- how to obtain data to answer questions of interest, description- summarizing and analyzing the data. Inference- making decisions and predictions based on data. Use a few numbers or a graph to summarize the data: ie. Average amount of tv watched or a graph displaying how number hours tv watched relates to number hours exervising per week. Decision or prediction refers t a larger group of people, not just those in the study. Description is stating the percentages for the sample of 3,889 voters; meanwhile, inference is predicting the outcome for all 9. 5 million voters.
