Carpetbagger- described northerners during reconstruction who came south following the civil war to take advantage of political and economic opportunities- they carried all of their possessions in a solitary carpetbag. Scalawag- used to identity a native white southerner who supported black and white. African american made up the third and largest constituency. 265 blacks out of 1,000 men were elected as delegates to 10 state conventions. All adult males could vote except in mississippi and virginia. Republicans- traitors to their people and the democratic party. Elections- held in 1868 to ratify new constitutions and elect officials- white response- some democrats boycotted and other participated but votes against ratification.
