Something we wanted to discuss was balram"s transformation throughout the course of the novel. P90 - balram finds out ram persad"s secret, that he"s a muslim. P92 - i was servant number one from now on in this household. Balram is starting to make the transition from lowly servant to a servant with slightly more power and authority. P126-127 - balram drives ashok and pinky madam to the mall. While there, a servant with sandals on his feet tries to go into the mall but is stopped. P126, one of the drivers comments, that fellow has balls. If all of us were like that, we"d rule india, and they would be polishing our boots. This comment perhaps sparks a chain of thought in balram"s mind, and later on another night, balram goes to the market and buys a plain white.
