Apollo is mad at agamemnon because agamemnon spurned apollo"s priest (chryses). Apollo"s priest wanted agamemnon to give his daughter back, but agamemnon refused. Achilles thinks it might be best to surrender/give up. The achaeans don"t know why apollo is so angry. Calchas, a seer, explains why apollo is angry - he wants his daughter back and can only be appeased if the achaeans carry 100 sacred bulls to chryse town. Agamemnon will give her back because he doesn"t want to see his people suffer (130- But he wants a different prize in return/as consolation. Agamemnon wants to put chryseis and a sacrifice on board a boat on the sea. Achilles doesn"t seem to have respect for agamemnon - refuses to do his fighting for him. Achilles doesn"t want to stay here and wants to go back to phthia. Agamemnon threatens to take away achilles" prize, briseis. Achilles debates whether to fight agamemnon now or cool his temper.
