PSY 103 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Libido, Anesthetic, Neurotransmitter Receptor
Document Summary
3. 1- neurons and behavior: nervous system cells. Neurons- cells of the nervous system that receive information and transmit it to other cells by conducting electrochemical impulses. Shape varies by whether they receive impulses from many or few places and whether they send impulses over a long or short distance. Consists of 3 parts: cell body, dendrites, axons. Glia cells- cells that support the neurons in many ways such as insulating them, synchronizing activity among neighboring neurons and removing waste products. Glia are smaller and more numerous than neurons. Cell body- contains the nucleus of the cell. Dendrites- widely branching structures that receive input from other neurons. Axon- single, long, thin, straight fiber with branches near the tip. Myelin- insulating sheath that speed up the transmission of impulses along an axon, which some neurons are covered in. Axons send out cells, cell bodies and dendrites receive them.
