CSCD 3235 Chapter Notes - Chapter 14: Lateral Corticospinal Tract, Anterior Grey Column, Upper Motor Neuron
Document Summary
Lateral pathways: lateral corticospinal tract, largest part of the corticospinal tract. Leave out of the tract and into the anterior horns of the spinal cord. Descending motor pathway that begins at the cerebral cortex, decussates in the pyramids of the lower medulla, and proceeds down the contralateral side of the spinal cord. Ventromedial pathways: descending pathway, includes anterior cortical spinal, reticulospinal, vestibulospinal, and tectospinal tracts. Controls axial and proximial muscles for postural control and equilibrium. Vestibulospinal tract: originates in vestibular nuclei and projects to spinal cord. Stimulates extensor muscles and inhibit flexor muscles of lower limbs under influence of ear and cerebellum maintenance of balance, don"t cross in spinal cord or midline. Receives info from visual system, aid in head and eye movement in response to visual stimuli, fibers cross over in brainstem. Pontine and medullary reticulospinal tract: pontine (medial) and medullary (lateral). Pontine enhances antigravity reflexes, helps maintain standing posture.
