Berlin conference: held in berlin, from october 1884-february 1885. Purpose was to discuss the future boundaries of africa and to prevent war among themselves and protect their interests. All important european powers, but no african representatives. Notice must be given before claiming a territory. Effective occupation of a territory was ground for legitimate claim. Any dispute between european powers must be settled by arbitration. Creating borders claims and disputes known as irredentism. Provided european powers the raw material to support their industrial revolution. European foot holding alone coasts expanded to large colonies due to: Railroads penetrated to the interior of the continent to superior lands and to mineral deposits. Steamship facilitated the transport of materials and increased the quantities of minerals supplied to europe"s factories. Nigeria: africa"s most populous country displays problems that can arise from the presence of many languages. Not one spoken language throughout the country. But use traditional authorities to enforce them (chiefs and headmen)
