Document Summary

Realists are pessimistic about human progress and cooperation beyond the boundaries of the nation-state. Realists share a pessimistic view of human nature. He sees humans as having a will to power . Essentially, they idea is that men/humans/states are mainly preoccupied with the acquisition and possession of power as well as the deployment and uses of power and central preoccupations of political activity by whatever means. Above all else international relations is seen, by realists, as power politics where states participate in con ict, rivalry and war to defend national interest and ensure survival of the state and the security of its people. These are not necessarily good reasons but de nitely valid as history presents con icts are often resolved in war, hence wwii and the defeat of one greater power by another. This makes sense considering the realist view that all states are not equal in power and distribution/ balance of power.
