Deviance very broad (answering phone in lecture all the way to murder) Functionalist approach explains existence of social phenomena by the functions they perform: state develops because society needs a decision-making center for social life. Emile durkheim (division of labor in society: social cohesion = way people form social bonds, relate to each other and get along every day, 2 ways society can hold together: Mechanical solidarity = social cohesion based on sameness. Every part is same as the others and has same function. Organic solidarity = each member performs different, specialized functions. Machine in which all parts different and meaningless out of the machine. Modern society: individuals offend collective conscious (common faith/set of norms) when they commit acts of deviance.
