NSC 170C1 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Diabetes Mellitus Type 2, Strength Training, Coeliac Disease
Document Summary
Proteins are organic nutrients that are chemically similar to lipids and carbohydrates because they contain carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms. Proteins, however, contain nitrogen, the element cells need to make a wide array of important biological compounds. All cells in your body contain proteins. Your body uses protein to: make, maintain, and repair cells, build structures. Collagen, keratin: produce enzymes, lubricants, and clotting compounds, transport substances, make antibodies. Antibodies are structures in the bloodstream that help prevent and combat infections: make certain hormones, maintain proper fluid balance and acid base balance. When the bodies supply of protein in inadequate, the level of protein in the blood decreases, and, as a result, some water leaks out of the bloodstream and enters spaces between cells. Accumulation of fluid in tissues is called edema. Help maintain acid base balance: the proper concentration of the hydrogen ion (h+) in the body. Too much h+ will be acidic and too little h+ will be basic.
