This week i learned a lot about how culture can have a great influence on sexuality and sexual expression. I also learned how spanish is a language that has gender-specific terms. I thought that the term machismo means anything manly, however in one of the readings the author describes the term as being employed to explain the violence that latino men exert over women (flores & carey 37). The sexualities reading was about how the acceptance and enjoyment of one"s sexuality is an important part of physical and emotional well-being. In latino and chicano culture, there is a dominant view of sexuality. These ideas are in conflict with many young chicanos. The reading called family therapy with hispanics was about latino men and the different strategies psychologists must employ to help their clients. The idea that sex is not something to talk about is also very much true in my culture.
