Methodology for planning production of things that need assembly. Used to answer 3 questions: what (needed, how much (needed, when (needed) Mrp system has 3 sources of info: master schedule, covers stacker/cumulative lead time for producing end tiems, bill-of-materials file, contains everything that is needed to finish only 1 product. Mass produced items is mass amount of bom file: product structure tree, shows subassemblies and needed parts. Inventory records file: time buckets, quantities on hand, quantities ordered, accuracy is important. Mrp processing: gross requirements, scheduled receipts, projected on hand, net requirements, planned-order receipts, planned-order releases, has timing and order size. Pegging: process of identifying parent items that have generated a given set of material requirements for an item. 2 systems to update mrp records: regenerative system, periodically updated, net-change system, updated continuously, production plan is changed when things occur. Includes: planned orders, order releases, any changes to planned orders, secondary reports, are optional outputs.
