Esimates say there are b/w 8 million and 50 million species alive on planet. Animals occur in lineage called opisthokonta, with fungi and single celled proists called choanolagellates. Animals = eukaryotes, share key traits: all animals=mulicellular, lack cell walls, but have extracellular matrix (ecm), which includes proteins for cell-cell adhesion & communicaion, all animals=hetertrophs=get c compound from other org. Mulicellular fungi and animals are similar: both are mulicellular heterotrophs that digest (break down) and absorb nutrients. But animals = only mulicelllular hetero that ingest food. Digesion in animals is within space (lumen) of digesive tract rather not in open exterior like fungi. Muscles and neurons are adaptaions that allow a large, mulicellular body to move eiciently. Bio know 30-35 phyla of animals - exact # being debated. Data used to deine body plan (fundamental architecture of animals: comparaive genomics- gives info about relaive similarity of genes or whole genomes of diverse organisms. Animals = monophyleic=all animals share a common ancestor.
