Document Summary

Chapter 13: spiritual life: moral development, values, and religion. Moral development involves changes in thoughts, feelings, and behaviors regarding standards of right and wrong. Interest in how children think about moral issues. 2 distinct stages: heteronomous morality: (4-7), (7-10: transition) Judge by consequences, not actor"s intentions (accidentally vs. intentionally) Think justice and rules as unchangeable, out of control of individuals. Afraid to consider new rules to games. Immanent justice: if rule is broken, immediate punishment: autonomous morality: (10+) Aware that rules and laws are created by people. Differences of social understanding stems from mutual give-and-take of peer relations: more in peer interactions: more negotiation-->faster development, more in parental interactions: less negotiations --> slower development. Moral advancements are inconsistent and vary across situations. People"s morality become more internal and mature. Each stages incorporates previous stages but with more sophistication. Universal, sequential, age-related: 10% adults think in post-conventional stages.
