William james described the mind as a stream of consciousness, a continuous flow of changing sensations, images, thoughts, and feelings. Fringe of the stream of consciousness which includes all of the thoughts and feelings that we have about our thoughts. Metacognition is the processes by which we think about thinking. Consciousness is an individual"s awareness of external events and internal sensations under a condition of arousal. Awareness includes awareness of the self and thoughts about one"s experiences. Arousal is the physiological state of being engaged with the environment. Physiological state determined by the reticular activating system, a network of structures including the brain stem, medulla, and thalamus. Theory of mind refers to individuals" understanding that they and others think, feel, perceive, and have private experiences. Higher-level consciousness involves controlled processing, in which individuals actively focus their efforts on attaining a goal; the most alert state of consciousness.
