Document Summary
Personality is a pattern of enduring, distinctive thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that characterize the way an individual adapts to the world. Psychodynamic perspectives on personality emphasize that personality is primarily unconscious. According to this viewpoint, the enduring patterns that make up personality are largely unavailable to our conscious awareness, and they powerfully shape our behaviors in ways that we cannot readily comprehend. The id consists of unconscious drives and is the individual"s reservoir of sexual energy. The ego, the freudian structure of personality that deals with the demands of reality. Tries to get the id what it wants within the norms of society. The superego is the harsh internal judge of our behavior. Defense mechanisms are tactics the ego uses to reduce anxiety by unconsciously distorting reality. Oedipus complex is the boy"s intense desire to replace his father and enjoy the affections of his mother.
