AMH 2010 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Wampanoag People, Squanto, Anne Hutchinson
Document Summary
In 1608, samuel de champlain led an expedition up the st. lawrence river to found a permanent settlement at quebec. This village was eventually joined by two others trois-rivieres and montreal located farther up the river. For several decades, the colony was managed by the company of new france, a private corporation working on its own behalf as well as in france"s imperial interests. The fur trade supporting new france"s development functioned as partnership between indians and europeans. Intermarriage was never widespread, occurring mainly among coureurs de bois ( wood runners ), independent fur traders who ventured into the forests to live and trade among native peoples. Indian peoples such as the montagnais and hurons welcomed the french not only as trading partners, but also as military allies, making sure that the newcomers understood that the two roles had to be linked.
