Intercultural communication- the interaction between people from different cultural backgrounds. More people today are exposed to global cultures through vacation travel, transnational jobs, military/ humanitarian services, international conflicts, immigrants, etc. Important because: communication between people from other cultures is common today, curiosity about others, convergence of technologies- social media for propaganda, youths have. It is economic- many trade deals with foreign countries, etc. smartphones showing wars, etc. Influx of foreign-born immigrants, aliens, and refugees that have taken over the us. Culture- unique combination of rituals, religious beliefs, ways of thinking, ays of behaving that unify a group of people. Dominant culture- determined by who has the power and influence in a group. Ex) us is white, male, able-bodied, straight, married, and employed. Non-dominant culture- exists within a larger, dominant culture but differs from the dominant culture in a significant characteristic. Ex) afghani may be dominant in afghanistan but moves to the us and becomes a non- dominant culture.
