Document Summary

The recognition that humans are influenced by their socio-cultural milieu is not particularly new to the field of psychology. When one is prejudice toward someone or a group of people, the person has prejudged the others prior to fully and objectively attempting to understand the others as they really are. Like stereotypes, prejudice can be positive or negative. Prejudice is not confined solely to ethnic or racial groups: ethnocentrism. People tend to see their own people as better in some way or another than people who do not belong to their group: racism. Preferring one"s own group over others, which would seem to imply that other groups are lower in value within one"s value or ranking system. A seemingly double-standard exists in the us regarding behaviors that are not tolerated when committed by white americans yet are tolerated and even encouraged when committed by nonwhite americans: religious bigotry. Almost all religious groups arrogantly believe their religion is the most.
