Back in 1810, progress had a political emphasis: republics, constitutions, elections. Upwardly mobile families tend to join liberals and long established status families tend to join conservatives. The mexican church is ever present in people"s lives: own a lot of land and property. Used to be mexico"s chief money lending institution. By mid 1800s, church owns half the best farmland in mexico, as well as monasteries, convents, urban real estate, and church buildings. Fuero: broad legal exemption from spanish law. Mexicans legally obligated to may a tenth of their income to church as tithe.
