Document Summary
Language is the system of symbols (words) that we use to think about and communicate experiences and feelings. It is governed by grammatical rules and influenced by contexts. A symbol is a sign representing a person, idea, or thing. Cognitive language: the system of symbols you use to describe people, things, and situations in your mind. Grammar the system of rules for creating words, phrases, and sentences in a particular language. Grammar has phonological rules (how something is pronounced) and syntactic rules (guiding the placement of words in a sentence) Communication accommodation theory (cat) explains how language and identity shape communication in various contexts: competent communicators adjust their language and nonverbal behaviors to the person, group, and context. Communication acquisition is the process of learning individual words in a language as well as how to use that language appropriately and effectively in various contexts. Researchers have identified five competencies for how language behaviors function: controlling, informing, feeling, imagining, and ritualizing.
