Chapter 3

The capture illustrates: the advancement and advantage of PIzarro’s soldiers’ weaponry, the
lack of immunity to the diseases brought by the Europeans, the developed maritime technology
of the Spanish, their written language allowed for better transfer of information, and their
politically organized system

Pay particular attention to Diamond’s chart on page 83. It summarizes a large portion of his
argument developed in the book and it is contained in one simple chart!
1. How is human density related to the domestication of plants and animals?
The domestication yielded a greater amount of food compared to the traditional h-g lifestyle.
Because of the transition from a nomadic to a sedentary lifestyle, there is more flexibility and
focus on increasing the standard of living and population size of the community. Essentially
advancement of the human population is due to the domestication of plants and animals.
Chapter 5
1. What four geographic areas does Diamond identify as suitable for agriculture that lacked
significant agriculture before European colonization?
African Sahel, West Africa, Ethiopia, and New Guinea-unsure if it was started de novo however
in chapter 8, Diamond mentions the regions California, Europe, temperate Australia, and
subequatorial Africa (131) as being highly suitable places but didn’t arise independently.

1. What five factors does Diamond identify as leading human beings to adopt food production
over hunting and gathering?
Wild game and plant species became less available-over-hunting and climate factors
