Document Summary

Certain elements can help readers understand unfamiliar conventions. Labels, call outs, and notes for picture conventions. Without clues about how to read conventions, readers can use inference to make reasonable guesses. Comparing visual elements with their interpretation of the world that those elements reference. Perceptual context can help readers clarify the meaning of the conventions. Fine print may cause readers to infer that it is unimportant. Exploded and whole object side-by-side can help readers infer the meaning of the disconnected pieces. Guided interpretations of contextual clues to draw inferences. Interpretive problems stem from misjudging the knowledge/experience of intended readers, or the convention unintendedly ending up with the wrong readers. Conventions are more likely to succeed if the designer and the reader both understand the communicative context. The reader has to decide whether the design intended to deploy a convention and has to discern its intended meaning in a given situation.
