HIEU 158 Chapter Notes - Chapter Reading: New Approach, Antisemitism, Anachronism
Document Summary
Many first hand accounts say that it was the native polish population who killed and beat the jews while the germans only took pictures and watched. At the trial for this, people changed their testimonies. They said that there were more germans there and that they had been intimidated. Not everyone changed their testimony and some called out the people who changed their stories, sticking to the original story that it was the poles. There were 92 men who were accused and only 9 were acquitted. This was half the male population of the town. There were also many people from other areas that came to kill the jews. 1500 jewish people were killed that day and the pogrom lasted the full day. Others were stabbed or beaten to death. It had been pre planned and the word had spread for some time because people from other towns were showing up early in the morning.
