They were farmers and didn"t look like jewish stereotypes, something that baffled their neighbors. They were also healthy and good looking. Belorussia was one of the better parts of eastern europe to be a jew because there was less violent, outward anti semitism. Also the jews of belorussia were generally poor, so anti semitism that came from envy was nonexistent. Second eldest son of the bielski family. Very intelligent and learned german, russian, and polish as well as belorussian without an accent. Married an older woman for her wealth and they had a harmonious marriage. Not interested in education like his older brother. Put in charge of arranging his sister"s wedding and fell in love with his future sister-in-law. Never told her how he felt because of the class difference. Negotiated the terms of his sister"s marriage.
