Early written sources are copied versions from later in time: mostly to deal with war and hierarchy, little day to day life recorded. Day to day life not seen as important information to write down. Some early written work survives because it is inscribed in durable materials. Residents of cities thought themselves more advanced than those living in rural areas: civilized/uncivilized. 5,000 years ago a new form of human society appeared. The rise of states, laws, and social hierarchies cities concentrated people and power, required more elaborate mechanisms to make them work than small agricultural villages and foraging groups.
