PSYC 1 Chapter Notes - Chapter 33 & 36: Narcissism, Analgesic, Ostracism
Document Summary
Psyc 1 textbook notes module 33: basic motivational concepts, module 36: Motivation: need/desire that energizes and directs behavior. Instinct theory: now evolutionary perspective; focuses on genetically predisposed behaviors. Drive-reduction theory: focuses on how we respond to our inner pushes. Arousal theory: focuses on finding the right level of stimulation. Hierarchy of needs: abraham maslow; priority of some needs over others. Instinct: complex behavior that is rigidly patterned throughout a species and is unlearned. Drive-reduction theory: idea that a physiological need creates an aroused tension state (drive) that motivates an organism to satisfy a need. Homeostasis: tendency to maintain a balanced constant internal state; regulation of any aspect of body chemistry around a particular level: ex: blood glucose. Human motivation aims to seek out optimum levels of arousal: bored and look for stimulation, too much stimulation and become stressed. Yerkes-dodson law: principle that performance increases with arousal only up to a point, beyond with performance decreases.
