Document Summary

Respiratory system: provides the body with oxygen and disposes of carbon dioxide, an exchange that also regulates the acidity of body fluids. 4 processes: 1) breathing/ventilating: brings oxygen in and moves co2 out of lungs, 2) external respiration: exchange of co2 and oxygen between the lungs and the blood. Oxygen from the blood is brought to the cells where it"s used in cell respiration to produce atp and co2. Co2 produced by the cells is brought to the blood. Upper respiratory system: nose, pharynx, larynx, epiglottis: nose. Moist mucous covers the entire inner surface. Filtration and cleansing: air particles; hairs, mucus, cilia. Conditioning air: blood in capillaries warms and moistens incoming air. Sinuses are spaces in the bones of the face connected to the nasal cavities. They warm and moisten the air and are lined with a mucous membrane. They drain the excess mucus and fluid into the nasal cavities: pharynx.
