Document Summary
Enzymes called rna polymerases are responsible for synthesizing rna by a polymerization reaction. Only one of the two dna strands is used as template and transcribed or read by polymerase. The strand that is read by enzme: template strand. The other : non-template strand or coding strand. Like dna polymerases: rna polymerase performs synthesis 5" to 3" direction. Unlike dna polymerases: does not require a primer to begin transcriptiom. Sigma must bind to polymerase before transcritption begins. Sigma binding sites named promoters, regions of dna that promote start of transcription. Tataat is centered about 10 bases from the point where trancriptiopn starts. Many eukaritoic promoters include a sequence called the tata bos. Orietation of promoter determines which dna strad will be used as template and in which direction rna polymerase will start synthesizing rna. The enzyme catalyzes the addition of nucleotides to the 3" end.
