Even within a country, organizations are leaning towards composition of workforce that is diverse in terms of the following -surface level diversity and deep level diversity. Before delving further into the factors concerning diversity workforce management, it is imperative to understand what are surface level and deep level diversity and how they affect the work system of an organization. Surface level diversity basically represents characteristics that are easy to observe and measure such as race and ethnicity, sex/gender, religion, cultural identity, physical disabilities, sexual orientation, language and so on. Deep level diversity on the other hand are differences that are not as easily measurable or noticeable such as personality, values, work preferences, attitudes, beliefs and so on. Managers, owing to their flawed perception of diversity and lack of broader understanding, tend to subconsciously fall into discriminatory practices that negatively affects the organization"s work stream. The key is to see more of the deep and less of the surface.
