Ability of a reader to read with appropriate rate, accuracy, and prosody, with. Appropriate referencing the reader"s age as well as the complexity of the text. Important because readers find it difficult to engage in more than one challenging task at a time. Focus will be more on understanding meaning than on decoding as fluency skills increase. Needs more work at this time (4th and 5th grade) Ability to recognize or decode a sufficient number of words within a given time. Automaticity - words correct per minute (wcpm) Reading accuracy - ability to pronounce words correctly within a given context. taken into account in wcpm. Readers" expression and ability to read phrases in chunks that represent their meaning. Ability to stick with reading the text, even though it may be difficult at times. Common core state standards suggest that fluency development should begin in kindergarten.
