East asia consists of china, japan, taiwan, south korea, and north korea. Relations between north korea and south korea remain hostile. Korea (like japan) is a mountainous land with scattered alluvial basins. South korea has an agricultural advantage over north korea. North korea has far more abundant natural resources than south korea. Taiwan = a small, mountainous, and mostly wooded country. Taiwan has a mild winter climate and typhoons in early autumn. China divided into 2 main areas: drier zone to the north of the yangtze river valley, humid region that includes the yangtze and all areas to the south. Far south climate is tropical or subtropical. North of the yangtze river valley climate is both colder and drier. Desertification the degradation of once-arable land in dry areas into desert. Much of north china plain is threatened by desertification. Tsunamis huge sea waves usually produced by underwater earthquakes.
