Contained about 40,000 entries and exhibited many of the features of a modern dictionary: etymologies (often incorrect), position of accent, and division into syllables. The first comprehensive american dictionary, an american dictionary of the english. Pointed out differences between british and american usage. Introduced spelling reforms that were intended to simplify the system: honor (for honour), center (for centre), tire (fore tyre), and draft (for draught) Contained 13 volumes, with 414,000 entries organized in such a way as to illustrate the history and development of each word since the time of king alfred (899 ad) A second edition came out in 1989. The g. & c. merriam company"s webster third new international dictionary.
